A Legacy of Second Chances: Sunburst Youth Academy Unveils New Outdoor Learning Center

Last Friday, Sunburst Youth Academy unveiled more than just a new outdoor classroom. It introduced a lasting symbol of hope, opportunity, and second chances.

With flags waving and cadets standing tall, the academy hosted a dedication ceremony for the Congresswoman Grace Napolitano Outdoor Learning Center—a $500,000 capital project that transformed an empty lot into a powerful learning space.

Located on the grounds of Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos, the new area features paved surfaces and permanent shade structures. Soon, weather-resistant tables will complete the space.

But beyond the design, it’s the message that matters.

“This space represents her belief in whole child education,” said Orange County Superintendent Dr. Stefan Bean. “It’s a symbol of healing, resilience, and opportunity.”

The ceremony gathered local and state leaders, along with military and education officials. All came to honor Congresswoman Grace Napolitano’s legacy and impact on thousands of young lives.

Because Sunburst Youth Academy is more than a school. It’s a life-changing program. Tuition-free and military-style, it serves youth ages 15 to 18 who are behind in school credits and need a structured, supportive environment to thrive.

Since opening in 2008, Sunburst has helped over 5,000 students get back on track, building both academic success and life skills.

At the ceremony, Major General Matthew P. Beevers, the highest-ranking officer in the California National Guard, highlighted Congresswoman Napolitano’s incredible influence.

“In California alone, she changed the trajectory of 20,000 young lives,” he said.

Her leadership helped raise federal funding for the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe program—from $20 million to $210 million. She also supported legislation that made it easier to convert military facilities into educational spaces.

To recognize her impact, Napolitano received the Order of California, the highest award from the California Military Department.

Joined by family and longtime supporters, she spoke with humility and gratitude.

“I couldn’t be prouder to receive this honor—just for doing a job,” she said. “I didn’t do things alone. This program is successful because of the people who supported it.”

That support now lives on in this new learning center—a space where cadets will grow, heal, and lead.

As Dr. Bean put it:
“Thanks to her, Sunburst is not just a school. It’s a second chance. It’s a launch pad. It’s hope.”
