Celebrating 5 de Mayo with Boxing and Cultural Pride

Happy 5 de Mayo!
Today, we celebrate not only the vibrant traditions of Mexico, but also the strength, pride, and heart that define its people—inside and outside the ring.

Each year, the WBC honors this important date with a very special tribute:
The 5 de Mayo Commemorative Belt, a unique trophy awarded to the winner of iconic fights held around this date, regardless of nationality.

This tradition began in 2017, born from the idea of blending culture and sport, heritage and honor. It’s more than a belt—it’s a message of unity and respect.

Every year, a different Mexican culture or region is selected to inspire the belt’s design. Artisans bring history to life through embroidery, leatherwork, and traditional colors.

These belts are a way to share Mexico’s rich legacy with the world, showing that boxing is not just a sport—it’s culture, identity, and storytelling.

Through these symbols, the WBC pays tribute to Mexican customs while celebrating global boxing excellence. Champions may come from anywhere, but the spirit of 5 de Mayo is universal.

From all of us at WBC Cares, we wish you a joyful and meaningful 5 de Mayo—filled with celebration, unity, and the true heart of boxing.
